Good Queen Bess ruled England and William Shakespeare had published the first of his plays when the timbers that were to form The Old Cage were being shaped. They of course are long gone but the 'Cage' has developed and survives.
From humble beginnings the Cage now provides restaurant and accommodation facilities to complement the bar. Mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1068, Lingfield itself is an historic village with a conservation area and many beautifully preserved buildings from the 16th to 18th centuries.
The nearby Church of St. Peter and St. Paul is the only large one of the Perpendicular style in Surrey. Rebuilt in 1431 with the original 14th century tower remaining, it contains some of the finest brasses and monuments in southern England.
A cross and village 'cage' is in the main street by the pond, from which the 'Old Cage' pub takes its name. Built in 1773, the village cage was last used in 1882 to hold a poacher. |
